BEREAL – THE NEW PLATFORM FOR AUTHENTIC PHOTO CONTENT
Show the real you! How the app wants to convince the social media world with this motto
There are always new apps and platforms that try to enter the social media world with an individual motto. And this is also how the new platform “BeReal” tries to convince with authentic photo content. What is the platform all about and what potential does it have?
What is BeReal?
BeReal is the new social media platform that makes it possible to share and publish authentic and spontaneous content with friends. However, the platform describes itself as “not another social media platform”, as it is primarily about capturing authentic moments of life and showing the world what situation you are in at the moment without filters or pre-production.
So the app focuses primarily on photo content. But what is so special about the app?
With BeReal, users are prompted to take a current photo at a certain point in the day. This request comes at a random time and the user has two minutes to take and publish the photo. The focus here is therefore primarily on snapshots, in order to integrate the real world more into the online world.
The prompted photo is taken simultaneously with the outdoor and indoor camera. In this case, the situation shows the current view and the person standing behind the camera. Within the two-minute countdown, users have time to take several pictures and can choose one afterwards. Another special feature of the platform is that only the pictures taken directly in the app are published. It is not possible to upload photos from the gallery.
If a user does not manage to shoot and publish the photo within these two minutes, the publication is marked “late”. In this way, each user will see that the photo was not taken in real time and probably represents a different situation.
How is the app structured?
There are many photo and video apps out there – but what makes BeReal different from them? Broadly speaking, it’s about taking and publishing pictures in real time.
The profile can be linked to the user’s own phone book, so that users can quickly connect with their friends. Those who don’t want to do this can also find profiles via their user names.
The special feature of the platform is that there is no usual feed that we know from Instagram & Co. Instead, each profile has a “Your Memories” area. This area is similar to the archive on Instagram and contains the spontaneously shot and shared photos of the respective days. The pictures are visible to the friends for 24 hours but remain saved for the own profile afterwards.
Even beyond the own friends, pictures can be consumed and profiles can be followed. Photos from various users can be viewed in a “Discovery” area.
Unlike the previous popular content apps, there is no possibility to communicate with each other. With BeReal, there is no usual chat as we know it. Here, it is only possible to send reactions to the pictures and thus send “realmojis” – because the focus is (and should remain) on the content and the authentic pictures.
Another difference is the availability of the images. It is not possible for users to just consume and track pictures of the different profiles, because users can only see other people’s pictures when they post photos themselves.
The app does not want images to be merely followed, but rather authentic moments to be shared at the same time.
Hype or establishment?
There are always apps that try the social media market and fail to establish themselves in the long run. What is the situation like with BeReal?
In the world of social media (and influencer marketing), authenticity and spontaneity are top priorities. So it’s all the more interesting that the app BeReal focuses precisely on these values. Users can produce content themselves that is captured from the present moment and share it with their friends for 24 hours.
This aspect plays a major role, especially in fast-paced everyday life. The production of the content does not take much time and must be completed within two minutes.
All in all, the platform has the potential to convince and establish itself. Especially because the platform only focuses on photos and does not offer many more options, it is easy for users to find their way around and use the app quickly. If one’s own friends are also active on the platform, this can quickly become popular. However, it remains to be seen whether the platform can really take its place alongside the large and very popular apps in the long term. But we say: BeReal offers great opportunities to promote authenticity and spontaneity and to capture the small moments of the day.
